Problems with breastfeeding or bottle feeding might be due to restricted tongue movement. Restrictive lingual frenulum or tongue tie can cause inadequate feeding, nipple pain, mastitis, prolonged jaundice or excessive swallowing of air.

At a face to face appointment, they will examine your baby and talk about the procedure. If your baby has tongue tie, they will offer to divide and then ask you to feed your baby and discuss post procedure care.

Interpretation and translation services can be arranged by staff. This is available for users of this service.

Referral Procedure: To use this service, you will need to be referred by a health professional. This means you must see your doctor or midwife. They will send your details to a service. Your doctor or midwife will refer you to the service that is the most suitable for your health needs. The service will then contact you to make an appointment or explain what will happen next.
How Service is Delivered: Initial contact will be a telephone call or email, you will be booked into see a specialist midwife / nurse or doctor. The baby will be offered an appointment at NNUH Jenny Lind Outpatient Department for a frenulotomy. Post-frenulotomy support will be offered as required. Follow up support is given by the 0-19 Children and Young People's Health Visiting Service.
Opening Times: Frenulotomy clinics run as they always have, at NNUH Jenny Lind Outpatients. Clinics are run 0830-1630 in general.
Compliments / Complaints: The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can listen to your issues, concerns, compliments or suggestions, resolve problems where possible, and feed back to services to aid service development.
