The Ophthalmology Emergency Referral Service (OERS) is designed to diagnose and treat emergency eye problems. It is available on a referral basis through your GP, optician, Accident & Emergency department and other healthcare providers.

Interpretation and translation services can be arranged by staff, for users of this service.

Referral Procedure: New patients require a referral from a health professional (e.g. GP, A&E, optician) to access the OERS at NNUH. Patients who are already under the care of the NNUH Ophthalmology department, or who have been discharged but are within a period of ‘patient-initiated follow-up’, may refer themselves to the OERS clinic directly.
How Service is Delivered: Patients are seen face to face at OERS clinics on a daily basis (Monday to Sunday) at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. Outside of the service’s core working hours, there is an on-call ophthalmologist available to receive emergency referrals from GPs, opticians, A&E clinicians and other healthcare professionals, 365 days a year. The service offers telephone advice and face to face appointments where required.
Opening Times: OERS clinics run at the following times, based in the West wing of Norfolk and Norwich hospital:
  • Monday to Saturday, 0830h - 1700h;
  • Sunday, 0830h - 1200h
Parking and Transport: Fee paying onsite parking available
Accessible by public and community transport.
Access and Facilities: The main entrance, lifts and toilet facilities are well sign posted and wheelchair accessible.
Compliments / Complaints: The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can listen to your issues, concerns, compliments or suggestions, resolve problems where possible, and feed back to services to aid service development.
