Children from birth until their 16th birthday are referred to the Children's Assessment Unit (CAU) by their GP or the Emergency Department for specialist emergency paediatric or surgical assessment. Depending on the initial assessment / examination and test results, the doctor may recommend a period of observation and / or treatment in CAU. Sometimes hospital admission to the Children's ward (Buxton) is necessary. However most children who attend CAU are able to go home.

The accepting clinican for CAU will advise on the urgency with which the patient should be seen and may recommend urgent OP review or arrange 'Open Access' for the patients who do not need to be seen immediately but can attend without further Primary Care review if their condition deteriorates. The CAU service should be used for emergency medical and surgical assessments only and is not a substitute to an urgent outpatient appointment.

Childhood illnesses can fall into different medical / surgical categories e.g. general paediatrics, medical or specialist medical problems such as: Oncology / haematology, gastroenterology, neurology, respiratory, rheumatology and endocrinology. There are a team of highly skilled paediatric surgeons to deal with emergency surgical conditions which can occur in childhood. Occasionally children develop problems which require the expertise of surgeons specialising in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery, Orthopaedics and Plastic Surgery.

Interpretation and translation services can be arranged by staff, for users of this service.
