The Emergency Department at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital is designed for life-threatening health problems. An emergency is 'a critical or life-threatening situation', such as:

  • Unconsciousness or stroke
  • Acute trauma such as road traffic collisions
  • A suspected heart attack
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Heavy blood loss
  • A deep wound such as a stab wound
  • Severe burns
  • Severe allergic reaction

The Department provides a minor injuries service, for conditions such as cuts, sprains, and breaks (fractures). Minor illnesses are generally looked after by your GP and can be accessed through the out-of-hours services, including 111.

Referral Procedure: By self-presenting (however we would encourage public to contact 111 in the first instance)
Opening Times: 24 hours
Parking and Transport: Onsite parking available (fee-paying). Accessible by public transport.
Access and Facilities: Wheelchair accessible entrance, lift and toilet facilities.
Loop hearing aid system.
Compliments / Complaints: The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) can listen to your issues, concerns, compliments or suggestions, resolve problems where possible, and feed back to services to aid service development.
